Detailed Description

1. Product Overview for Tank Truck Industry

5182 aluminum sheet is one of the strongest non heat treatable aluminum magnesium alloys. For tank truck applications it is widely used to manufacture tank bodies. The O temper provides maximum ductility for deep drawing complex tank head shapes while H111 tempers offer stable mechanical properties for tank body panels and welded structures.

Compared to steel tankers aluminum 5182 reduces vehicle weight by approximately 40 to 50 percent increasing payload capacity and reducing fuel consumption. Compared to 5083 aluminum 5182 offers higher tensile strength and better elongation making it the preferred choice for deep drawn tank heads and formed tank components.

2. Key Features for Tank Truck Applications

  • Excellent Deep Drawing Performance O temper allows forming of complex tank head shapes without cracking achieving limit drawing ratio above 2.2

  • High Strength After Forming Work hardening during deep drawing increases the strength of the formed part eliminating the need for heat treatment

  • Outstanding Corrosion Resistance Resists corrosion from gasoline diesel crude oil chemicals water milk and food products

  • Good Weldability Easy to weld using 5356 filler wire for tank body assembly and baffle installation

  • Lightweight Density 2.66 g per cubic cm reduces vehicle weight and increases payload

  • Smooth Surface Finish Accepts painting and coating for tank branding and product identification

  • Long Service Life 20 to 30 years with proper maintenance

5. Advantages of 5182 Aluminum for Tank Bodies

Tank bodies are typically cylindrical and constructed by rolling flat sheets and welding longitudinal and circumferential seams

  • Good Weldability 5182 welds easily with 5356 filler wire producing strong leak tight seams suitable for liquid transport

  • High Strength The H111 and H112 tempers provide tensile strength up to 269 MPa allowing thinner gauge material than 5083 for the same pressure rating

  • Corrosion Resistance The high magnesium content provides excellent resistance to internal corrosion from transported liquids and external corrosion from road salt and weather

  • Lightweight A typical aluminum tank body weighs 40 to 50 percent less than steel allowing higher payload

  • Easy Repair Damaged sections can be cut out and replaced by welding without special heat treatment

6.Why 5182 is Better Than 5083 for Tank Trucks
